Pyrenees 2012 Travel Ideas

Hello,
over the next few days i will keep this page updated with progress,
i am looking into the best travel options for next year.

This year me and James sailed between the hours of midnight and 6am dover to dunkirk making the return trip just £44 and spent around £170 each way on fuel, with about £30 on food and other stops along the way creating for us a total of £414,

i will post the cost of all the ferry crossings over the next few days with estimated fuel costs at the other side.

I quite liked the ponder through the centre of France, made if feel like you have achieved something when you arrive at the start line but the boat sounds quite appealing

I do like the thought of the boat but I think part of the adventure is the journey to and from. How much roughly are the tolls in France etc?

We will plan you a route with no tolls,
on the reccee we missed one junction costing us 2 Euros and on the way to and from the actual event we incurred no toll fees

Just the cost of a Pizza or two and maybe a bit of fuel

I have always said that a big part of the adventure is in the Journey, every team last year took a different route to the start & back and saw some things that they have always wanted too such as team Barca went to the Somme on the way home & and Team Road runners (Lenny) went to the milou bridge & our very own Marc & Amanda support crew went to Andorra

yeah the journey though france is nice, its pretty good to go the toll free way as it isnt much slower possibly an hour or 2 but your on holiday so whats an hour or two?? The greatest fun we had was the turning the sat nav on and following it to see where we ended up, as no matter what setting we put it on it wouldn't go a sensible way when avoid tolls was set spent many hours wondering through central france down little farm tracks

Keith and I left England on the Wednesday morning before the event and traveled to Laon on the first day. We stopped in a sort of Travel lodge place @ 60 Euros. The town has an old mediaval hilltop centre which was quite interesting. We then travelled down to St Nectaire which is a bit like Matlock Bath. We did however end up green laning courtesy of our sat nav who doesnt know tarmac from grass ! This area was quite hilly with old volcanos (They bottle Volvic near here) From here we headed to Millau. I'd always wanted to see the bridge. This cost us 8.70 Euros to cross it on the motorway but that was the only toll that we paid in either direction. We then headed to Tarbes which was the start point (once again the sat nav let us down as there was a campsite with the same name in Lourdes and it was insistent we went there. Never trust these sat navs !)

On the way back we left from Spain on the Saturday morning and travelled north over two days arriving about 7.30pm near Dunkirk. We stopped at a campsite near to the ferry. We had the luxury of being able to add a couple of days to the trip and make it part of the holiday. I didnt check the amount of fuel we used but covered about 250 miles more that Kieran did but we did go east of Paris going south. (I think Keith's got those stats)
